Adult Autism Support Group (UPSTAIRS) @ Trinity Presbyterian Church

Barbara J Nichols, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist, facilitates this support group for adults who have either been diagnosed with Asperger’s disorder or who believe they may have it. This group is a peer support group in which participants discuss the traits, characteristics, and talents of those on the autism spectrum. It is an informal and relaxed setting where people can share their thoughts and feelings while asking for feedback and support. Topics relevant to the autism spectrum are presented and discussed.

You may show up for the group without prior notice. There is no registration process. The groups are continuous throughout the year without a break for holidays unless the holiday falls on the exact day of a group. Please feel free to join us anytime. This website is maintained weekly for updates for your convenience.

FACILITATOR: Barbara J Nichols, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who has worked in the mental health field for over 30 years. She specializes in the treatment and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders and ADHD, as well as specializing in the treatment of trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, and relationship issues.

DAY: First and Third Thursday of each month throughout the entire year.

DIRECTIONS: From Interstate 10 (I-10) exit Speedway Blvd (exit 257), and proceed EAST. Turn right onto N. 4th Avenue (heading south). Turn LEFT onto University (heading east). The church parking lot will be visible on your right.

The Trinity Presbyterian Church is located on the southeast corner of University and 4th Avenue. The Sanctuary entrance is on the east facing side of the church and looks out onto a large parking lot.

Enter the Sanctuary door and walk to the far end of the lobby. You will pass the chapel and community room. Turn left and go to the second floor either by stairs or elevator.

Adult Autism Family Support Group (DOWNSTAIRS) @ Trinity Presbyterian Church

Marilyn Riesch, M.S., a former rehabilitation counselor, facilitates this support group for family members (spouses, significant others, parents, adult siblings) of adults with Asperger’s disorder. She offers support and guidance based on her education, her work with disabled individuals, and her experience as a family member of an adult with Asperger’s. She has facilitated our groups since 2004.

The family group is designed to help family members to manage the special issues that the syndrome presents to the family. The focus is on strategies and interventions for improved family and relationship life, as well as the exchange of ideas for launching young adults with Asperger’s into independence. Members give each other suggestions and support while encouraging one another in the process of learning and change.

The group is open to anyone with a family member who has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome or who believes that they may have Asperger’s. You may show up for the group without prior notice.
